The Africa Deep Tech Foundation (ADTF) has launched the Africa Deep Tech Challenge (ADTC) 2026, focusing this year on a single, practical goal: getting artificial intelligence to run entirely offline on standard laptops that run on the hardware most African builders already have.
Dubbed "The Laptop LLM Challenge," the initiative asks engineers, researchers, and builders across the continent to develop capable language models that fit within an 8GB RAM limit, without calling home to a cloud server.
"Most AI tools today come with a hidden catch: they assume you have infinite cloud access and deep pockets for software subscriptions," said Emeka Afigbo, Convener of the Africa Deep Tech Foundation.
