Why it matters
Corruption in public-facing government offices undermines citizen trust and highlights the need for administrative reform and oversight.
The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has found several irregularities during a surprise check at the unit office of the Transport Department in Korutla of Jagtial district on Tuesday.
The ACB’s Karimnagar Range conducted the surprise check and examined office records, financial transactions, challans, pending applications and the overall functioning of the office during the raid.
According to the ACB, it was found that a Transport Constable, N. Girish Kumar, was conducting driving tests and checking vehicle registrations in the absence of the Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI).
The inspection also revealed that the staff were allegedly collecting excess amounts from the public through agents in return for extending official favours. The ACB said agents had free access to the office and were dealing directly with concerned staff of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) office until completion of applications submitted by members of the public.
