Abhimanyu gets special permission for Dasara appearance as ‘Nishane Ane’
The Forest Department has granted special permission for the 60-year-old tusker Abhimanyu to participate in the 2026 Mysuru Dasara festivities. Despite retirement guidelines for elephants of his age, he will serve as the 'Nishane Ane' due to his health and distinguished service record.

In a special dispensation, the Forest Department has given 60-year-old veteran Dasara tusker Abhimanyu permission to participate in the 2026 Mysuru Dasara festivities, allowing the legendary elephant to take part in the Jamboo Savari as ‘Nishane Ane’, despite the existing guidelines requiring elephants to retire from service after attaining the age of 60.
The special permission comes following a suggestion from Forest and Environment Minister Ramalinga Reddy that Abhimanyu, which carried the golden howdah for six consecutive years, be accorded the special status of ‘Nishane Ane’ in the Jamboo Savari in recognition of his invaluable service to the Mysuru Dasara and his long association with human-elephant conflict operations.
