Why it matters
This decision resolves a major legal conflict between infrastructure development and environmental compliance legislation.
A court ruling that halted Northern Ireland's biggest roads project has been overturned.
A £1.7 billion upgrade of the A5, which runs from the Co Monaghan border at Aughnacloy, to Co Derry, can now proceed following a ruling by the Court of Appeal.
The plan is to build a new dual carriageway along the entire 85km route.
It has been labelled the most dangerous road in Ireland with 57 people killed in collisions along the route during the past 18 years.
The Irish Government has pledged more than €600 million towards the project.
