A16z is the latest VC giant to widen bets beyond crypto and into AI and emerging tech

Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) is rebranding its crypto-focused fund to 'a16z Frontier' to broaden its investment scope into AI, autonomous machines, and emerging technologies. The firm maintains that it remains committed to crypto, but sees the distinction between blockchain and other tech sectors blurring.
Why it matters
This shift reflects a broader trend among major venture capital firms moving away from a crypto-exclusive focus toward more diversified AI and deep-tech portfolios.
The Silicon Valley firm is renaming its a16z Crypto fund to a16z Frontier, targeting startups developing technologies and markets that may take years to mature, general partner Chris Dixon said in a Thursday blog post .
The move doesn't mean a16z is abandoning digital assets. The firm will continue backing crypto companies and advocating for crypto regulation, Dixon said.
"This is an expansion: we will continue to invest in crypto and related ventures and advocate for sensible crypto regulation," he wrote.
The VC giant had played a significant role in shaping the crypto industry. An early Coinbase investor, the firm also backed major blockchain projects including Solana (SOL) and decentralized exchange Uniswap (UNI), while pouring billions into crypto startups and becoming a prominent voice in U.S. policy debates.
