I am eyeing a beautiful breakfast plate on my table at Sri Lakshmi Cafe as clouds drift over the hills in Coonoor on a pleasant monsoon morning. One bite of the delicate, steaming hot thatte idli soaked in ghee and a generous drizzle of fiery gunpowder on top, and I am sold. “We dined at many places and took note of what people liked. That’s how ghee podi idli appeared on the menu,” says Madhumitha Ravichandran, director of the cafe. Her husband Nitin Suresh and his brother Nikhil Suresh and his wife Aishwarya run a group of hotels and restaurants in Coonoor, including Hopscotch restobar, the Realm resort, Sri Lakshmi Cafe and Hotel Ramachandra.
