A.P. Congress leader seeks resignation of CEC, PM Modi and HM Shah over SIR
Congress leader N. Raghuveera Reddy has demanded the resignation of top Indian election officials and the cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. He alleges the process is non-transparent and designed to weaken the opposition.
Why it matters
The accusations strike at the integrity of the electoral process in India, reflecting deep political tensions between the ruling NDA and the opposition.
Congress Working Committee member N. Raghuveera Reddy on Monday demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and called for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to be scrapped.
Addressing a press conference in the city, the former Minister described the exercise as non-transparent and alleged that about 13.5 crore votes had been deleted to weaken the Opposition. He called the nationwide agitation “another freedom struggle” in defence of the principle of “one vote, one value”.
Mr. Reddy alleged that protesters in Delhi on October 9 and 10 were met with a deployment of about 40,000 police personnel, cancelled trains and suspended Internet services, and said the Supreme Court had ordered services restored. He also alleged that the Chandrababu Naidu-led government had arrested Congress and INDIA bloc leaders in the State.
