A dedicated Cardiac Centre of Excellence proposed at GRH
Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai has proposed a new 'Cardiac Centre of Excellence' to address the rising demand for advanced heart care in southern Tamil Nadu. The facility aims to expand capacity beyond the current overburdened cardiology department, which serves over 1.6 lakh patients annually.

Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai serves as a vital tertiary referral centre and lifeline for more than 20 million residents across the southern region of Tamil Nadu, anchored by its essential Department of Cardiology.
However, as the burden of cardiovascular diseases continues to rise, the demand for advanced, timely, and affordable cardiac care has surpassed the existing infrastructure.
To meet this pressing need, a comprehensive proposal has been submitted to the Tamil Nadu government to establish a dedicated ‘Cardiac Centre of Excellence’—a state-of-the-art facility poised to improvise heart care in the region. Though the children care ward on GRH campus is temporarily proposed for the cardiac centre the site would be earmarked by the government.
Since its inception in 1981, the Cardiology Department at GRH has evolved from a small unit handling basic diagnostics to a high-volume hub performing complex, international-standard interventions.
