A 30-year-old fossil was hiding bones from a mysterious ancient sea monster
Researchers have identified four fossil bones, including a rare premaxilla, that were misidentified for 30 years within a Japanese mosasaur specimen. These unique anatomical features suggest the fossils may belong to a previously unknown species of ancient marine reptile.
Researchers from Okayama University of Science, Tokyo City University, the Natural History Museum, Kishiwada City (Osaka Prefecture), and other institutions have uncovered four fossil bones that went unrecognized for roughly three decades. The bones were found inside rock containing mosasaur remains collected in Kishiwada City, Osaka Prefecture.
