91 deregistered vehicles impounded in LTA-SPF islandwide enforcement blitz

Singapore authorities have impounded 91 deregistered vehicles in a recent enforcement operation to improve road safety. The government is also proposing new legislation to tighten disposal requirements and increase penalties for illegal vehicle use.
Why it matters
Effective vehicle management is essential for urban traffic safety and regulatory compliance in densely populated cities.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Singapore Police Force (SPF) have impounded 91 deregistered vehicles following an islandwide enforcement operation in September.
The joint enforcement blitz was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to crack down on the keeping and use of deregistered vehicles, said the two agencies in a press release on Monday (Oct 5).
Such vehicles can pose a road safety risk as they are neither roadworthy nor have valid insurance. They are also used without valid Certificate of Entitlement (COE) or road tax.
Penalties for keeping or using unregistered or deregistered vehicles were increased in February this year.
First-time offenders can be fined up to $20,000 and/or jailed for up to two years, with repeat offenders facing double the penalties.
More measures are also in the pipeline to tighten enforcement and ensure deregistered vehicles are properly disposed of.
