£50m Centre to Unlock Secrets of Early Brain Development

A new £50 million research centre, led by King's College London, has been launched to investigate early human brain development. The centre will utilize AI and advanced imaging to map the cerebral cortex and identify markers for healthy development.
Why it matters
This research aims to bridge the gap between early brain signals and long-term developmental outcomes, potentially revolutionizing pediatric clinical interventions.
A landmark centre aims to discover exactly how the human brain develops for the very first time.
The new Medical Research Council (MRC) Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) for Human Neural Development will integrate world-leading expertise with cutting-edge research to fill in major gaps in the fundamental understanding of brain growth and development.
Led by King's College London, in partnership with University College London (UCL) and the University of Manchester, the key aim is to understand the critical mechanisms underpinning early brain development, from the womb to early childhood, and how their disruption can inform effective treatments.
