4 dead, several injured after multi-vehicle crash along Stoney Trail: police

A wrong-way driving incident on Stoney Trail in Calgary resulted in a multi-vehicle collision that killed four people, including a child. Police are investigating speed and impairment as potential factors in the crash.
Why it matters
The incident highlights ongoing public safety concerns regarding highway traffic management and impaired driving.
A child is among the four people killed in a crash involving a vehicle that police say was driving the wrong way along Stoney Trail Sunday night.
It happened around 11 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway, near the Tsuut’ina Parkway. That’s when police believe a 2011 Mercedes Benz C350 being driven by a 30-year-old man who was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes collided with an on coming 2016 Subaru Impreza.
“On arrival units found that there was two cars engulfed in flames and one other car that was severely damaged,” said Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward with the Calgary police.
In a release, Calgary Fire said upon arrival, crews “immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack while simultaneously conducting rapid searches of the involved vehicles and providing emergency care to those who could be reached.”
