4.63 lakh fish fingerlings to be released in Palakkad reservoirs

The Fisheries department and Palakkad district panchayat are releasing 4.63 lakh fish fingerlings into six local reservoirs. This initiative aims to boost inland fish stocks and provide a sustainable income source for local fisherfolk.
Why it matters
It supports local food security and economic development for marginalized fishing communities in the Palakkad district.
The Fisheries department and Palakkad district panchayat will release 4.63 lakh fish fingerlings reservoirs across the district as part of a programme to increase inland fish stocks and support fisherfolk. The programme will cover six reservoirs in the district: Walayar, Kanjirapuzha, Mangalam, Pothundi, Chulliyar and Meenkara.
The project aims to increase fish stocks, provide a steady income for fisherfolk and ensure a supply of quality fish. Fisherfolk from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe fisheries cooperative societies are engaged in fishing in these reservoirs. District panchayat president S.B. Raju inaugurated the release of fingerlings in the Walayar reservoir on Monday. The district panchayat has allocated ₹20 lakh for the project.
