According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake, measuring 4.2, struck at 8.07 p.m., with its epicentre located two km northwest of Uttarkashi at a depth of 11 km.
Purushottam Uniyal, a priest from Kharsali village, the winter seat of Yamunotri, said the tremors were strong enough to cause televisions inside homes to shake. The sudden and intense tremors triggered panic, prompting people to rush outdoors, he said.
