Nolo prompted new advisories for parts of the Hawaiian Islands on Thursday as it strengthened into a hurricane while moving northward toward the Aloha State.

Nolo is forecast to become a major hurricane on Saturday, with the big question being how close it will come to the Big Island (Hawaii) before making a forecast turn westward.

The closer it gets to the islands before making that turn, the greater the risk of dangerous wind impacts, the National Hurricane Center said in a forecast discussion on Thursday. Regardless of its ultimate track, Nolo is forecast to lash the islands of Hawaii and Maui with rough surf, storm surge and copious amounts of rainfall.
