3.85L complaints, appeals pending with 28 information commissions
A new report indicates that over 385,000 appeals and complaints are currently pending across 28 information commissions in India. The data highlights significant delays in the Right to Information (RTI) process, with many commissions facing waiting times of over a year.
Why it matters
The backlog undermines the effectiveness of transparency laws, potentially limiting public access to government information and accountability.
NEW DELHI: Over 3.85 lakh appeals and complaints were pending across 28 information commissions as of June 30 this year. Moreover, 14 commissions have an estimated waiting time of 1 year or more to dispose of a matter. Data shows 2,61,669 appeals and complaints were registered between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, by 27 information commissions for which relevant information was available.
