25 years after project first began, final stretch of Team Gushue Highway is opening Friday

The final section of the Team Gushue Highway in Newfoundland and Labrador has officially opened after 25 years of construction. The highway is named after Olympic curler Brad Gushue and his team, who were honored following their 2006 gold medal win.
Why it matters
The completion of this long-term infrastructure project marks a significant milestone for regional transportation in St. John's.
The Newfoundland and Labrador government officially opened the highway during a Friday morning event at the Admiralty House Communications Museum's annex in Mount Pearl.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Barry Petten said people will be able to drive on the road following the event at the annex, when the barricades come down.
"Too bad it's not a nicer day,” Petten said, alluding to the rainfall over the metro area.
“It's great to finally see it being completed,” he told CBC Radio’s The St. John’s Morning Show ahead of the opening.

Petten was in attendance at the opening, along with Fisheries Minister Loyola O’Driscoll, MP Tom Osborne, Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker, St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen and Olympian Brad Gushue.
