The death toll in a building collapse in Delhi rose to seven on Monday last week (September 7, 2026), following the incident a day earlier. The building, operating as a Paying Guest accommodation, collapsed after a load-bearing wall was disturbed during renovation work in the basement, as per the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The incident put the spotlight on a long-standing crisis of inadequate student housing in the city, which is home to the Delhi University and its attached colleges among other well-known institutions. Besides this issue, attention also turned to unauthorised construction and modifications of residential buildings into PGs and MCD’s lack of regulation .
