Two people have died in a road crash near Northland’s Ahipara this morning.
The two-vehicle crash occurred around 9.40am on Kaitaia-Awaroa Rd, in Pukepoto .
Two people died at the scene and a third person was critically injured, police said.
Kaitaia-Awaroa Rd, near the intersection with Tangonge Rd, was closed for most of the day while a scene examination was carried out.
At 4pm, police said detours remained in place and the road would be closed for several more hours.
Hato Hone St John sent a helicopter, two ambulances and a manager to the scene, while Fire and Emergency New Zealand freed a person trapped in a vehicle, shift manager Colin Underdown said.
Kaitāia and Ahipara firefighters remained at the scene on Friday afternoon.
