2,079 non-functioning streetlights identified across Chennai city

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has identified 2,079 streetlights that were not functioning during a city-wide night inspection recently, Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said.
The inspection was conducted throughout the city, to ensure all 3,11,285 streetlights in the city remain operational, on September 16, 2026 following the Commissioner’s directions. Senior officials assigned to oversee the three regions and all 15 zones, according to a press release.
Of the 2,079 non-functioning lights, 850 were located at sites where stormwater drain, Chennai Metro Rail and Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board works were under way. Another 230 were affected by faults in underground power cables, while 999 LED lights were found to be non-functional, the release said.
