The festival of St. Antony and Madalai Mary Church in Vakkampatti, Athoor taluk, Dindigul district, began on July 18 with the flag hoisting event.
The main event of the festival, the electric chariot procession, began on Tuesday night in front of the church. At that time, firecrackers were burst to welcome the chariot.
Unexpectedly, a spark fell on a pile of firecrackers stacked nearby.
The firecrackers exploded all at once, spreading fire over the public gathered there. Shocked by this, people ran in panic.
