BARUIPUR: An 11-year-old girl who had gone missing a day earlier was found dead in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Sunday, police said. The body was recovered from the Surjyapur Haat area in Baruipur on Sunday morning, according to news agency PTI. It was found stuffed inside a sack, triggering protests by local residents, who blocked the Baruipur-Joynagar Road and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible. The blockade was lifted after senior police officers reached the spot and assured the protesters of a speedy investigation and appropriate legal action. Police have sent the body to a hospital for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death and ascertain whether any sexual assault was committed on the victim. A police officer said that one person has been detained in connection with the case and is currently being questioned. According to police, the girl had left her home on Saturday afternoon to buy a gift for her friend’s birthday but did not return.
