Tirunelveli district police have detained the 100th person under the Goondas Act this year as part of their efforts to curb crimes linked to drugs, alcohol and casteism.
While R. Karthik Shankar Raja, 37, of Tana, within the Vickramasingapuram police station limits, was the 99th person detained under the Act, his associate K. Mariappan, 42, of the same area, became the 100th. Both had been lodged in the Palayamkottai Central Prison after being arrested in connection with various criminal cases.
Inspector of Police, Vickramasingapuram, Prabhu Bhaskar, recommended their detention under the Goondas Act, stating that the duo was causing law and order problems across the district. Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Balasubramaniam Shastri forwarded the recommendation to Collector Anand Mohan, who ordered their detention on Wednesday.
