₹1.97 crore subsidy allotted for setting up maize cultivation demonstration plots on 1,740 hectares in Virudhunagar district: Collector

The Virudhunagar district administration has allocated ₹1.97 crore in subsidies to promote maize cultivation through demonstration plots covering 1,740 hectares. Farmers can access these subsidies for seeds and agricultural inputs by visiting local extension offices.
Why it matters
Government-backed agricultural subsidies are critical for supporting rainfed farming regions and improving crop yields for smallholder farmers.
A sum of ₹1.97 crore has been allotted under National Agriculture Development Programme (Maize) and National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (Maize) for establishing demonstration plots on 1,740 hectares of land in Virudhunagar district, said Collector Sharanya Ari.
Besides, ₹1.24 crore has been allocated under Public Distribution System Scheme for distribution of agricultural inputs.
In a statement, she said that around 35,000 hectares of maize is cultivated under rainfed regions in the district.
Subsidy inputs comprising 15 kg of maize seeds, 12.5 kg of micronutrient mixture, one litre of liquid bio-fertilizer, 15 kg of crop growth catalyst and 4 kg of bio-pesticide will be provided at a subsidy of up to ₹11,500 per hectare. Each farmer can establish demonstration plots covering a maximum area of two hectares, the statement said.
